Box Hill is one step closer to having a dedicated home for AFL and athletics, with The Hills Shire Council awarding the tender for the construction of a brand-new sports complex at Water Lane Reserve in Box Hill.
The new sport and recreation precinct will feature:
- 2 x state-of-the-art AFL fields
- Athletics facilities including a running track
- Shaded playground
- Half basketball court
- 200 parking spaces
- Amenities building with accessible toilets, change rooms, canteen, referees' room, and storage
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said the project was a significant milestone in Council's commitment to providing essential recreational infrastructure for the growing Box Hill community.
"The Water Lane Reserve Sports Complex will transform the area's recreational offerings, providing quality facilities for both formal sports and casual community use," Mayor Byrne said.
"This facility will support organised sports such as AFL in winter and athletics in summer, whilst also offering welcoming open space for residents to gather, exercise, and play."
The $19.6 million project is being delivered in partnership with the NSW Government through the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and is part of a broader recreational strategy to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community. It will be one of six new sports field developments in Box Hill, following the successful opening of the Brindle Parkway Sports Complex last year.
"I'd like to thank the NSW Government for their contribution in helping bring this project to life," Mayor Byrne added.
"We look forward to continuing this partnership as we work to close the $207 million infrastructure gap in Box Hill and deliver the essential facilities our community needs."
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said this is an important project to support Box Hill's current and future residents.
"This project will deliver quality green open space where people can come together to relax and play in Box Hill," Minister Scully said.
"There's few things Australians love more than sport so it's important that we continue to invest in key sports infrastructure that can feed that passion at a grass roots level."
