I recently sat down with Nicole Asher, ABC's state political reporter, to discuss the Building and Plumbing Commission's (BPC) key reforms and how we will better support Victorian consumers and practitioners.
The case of the Abela family featured on ABC Stateline highlights the weaknesses in the system and why we need to change it. We now have changes underway that will make a difference.

Finishing your plumbing apprenticeship, or know someone who is? Once training is complete, a plumbing apprentice must register with the BPC before they can legally continue plumbing work in Victoria – even supervised work.
BPC blitz finds failed drainage inspections
A statewide blitz found one in three drains failed inspection. The BPC is warning plumbers to ensure their drainage work is compliant and urging consumers to always use a licensed plumber.
BPC supporting research to improve consumer outcomes
BPC-backed research projects underway include developing a prototype for a virtual reality-based building code assessment training tool, designing and building safely on Victoria's expansive soils, and identifying the challenges and opportunities of emerging technologies.
Building Legislation Amendment (Fairer Payments on Jobsites and Other Matters) Bill 2025
This Bill was introduced to Parliament 10 September 2025, implementing 16 recommendations from a Parliamentary inquiry into employers and contractors who refuse to pay their subcontractors for completed works.

The BPC is proud to continue its strong partnership with the Master Builders Association of Victoria to support the next generation of building professionals.
Stronger standards and faster approvals for single homes and small second homes
The Victorian Government updated residential planning rules on 8 September 2025 to allow quicker and more efficient approvals for homes and small second homes (dwellings) on lots under 300 square metres.
Support for locally made hot water products
The Victorian Government is supporting local hot water manufacturers with a higher rebate of up to $1,400, now available to eligible Solar Homes Program customers who select a locally made hot water product.
