The City of Parramatta is celebrating National Tree Day 2020 a little differently this year, inviting the community to submit a special message in recognition of the day.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all Planet Ark National Tree Day planting events have been cancelled.
Despite this, Council has proceeded with planting 10,000 native trees, shrubs, and ground covers at Upjohn Park in Ermington - this year's selected National Tree Day site.
Members of the public can submit a message to Council describing what they love about nature and National Tree Day. These messages will then be displayed among the new plants in Upjohn Park throughout August.
"National Tree Day is an important reminder for us all to do our part in taking care of the environment," City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.
"The 10,000 plants we put in each year helps to increase biodiversity and improve habitats, which will have lasting benefits on our City's environment for years to come.
"Submitting a message to Council is a wonderful way to bring community spirit to National Tree Day in the absence of our much-loved planting event. I encourage everyone to get involved so that we can still celebrate this important day even though we cannot all come together."
Community members can submit their messages for the Adopt a Plant Program until 17 July.
