The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its commitment to provide clean, safe and secure drinking water for the Ayr community, with the opening of the South Ayr Filtration Plant today.
The South Ayr Filtration Plant is backed by $54.88 million from the Crisafulli Government, delivered in partnership with Burdekin Shire Council to strengthen water security.
The former Labor Government spent a decade neglecting regional water security, allowing ageing infrastructure to deteriorate and leaving regional communities without the investment they needed to secure reliable water supplies.
The new filtration plant will deliver safe, reliable and higher-quality drinking water to Ayr, Brandon and Alva, while addressing the historical issues experienced by the South Ayr community.
The facility will treat water sourced from the South Ayr borefield using a multi-stage process including iron and manganese pre-treatment, dual media filtration, disinfection and solids handling.
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the completion of Stage 1 works at the South Ayr Filtration Plant was another example of the Crisafulli Government getting on with the job of delivering essential infrastructure for regional Queenslanders.
"For far too long, regional Queensland communities were left waiting for the investment they needed in essential water infrastructure, but the Crisafulli Government is turning Labor's failures around," Minister Leahy said.
"This $54.88 million investment will deliver clean, safe and more reliable water for Ayr, Brandon and Alva, while addressing the long-standing water quality issues experienced by the community.
"This is what delivering for regional Queensland looks like, investing in the infrastructure communities need to support generations to come."
Member for Burdekin Dale Last said the completion of the South Ayr Filtration Plant was a significant win for the local community.
"Our local communities of Ayr, Brandon and Alva deserve access to clean, safe and reliable drinking water, and this new filtration plant will make a real difference to the quality of our supply," Mr Last said.
"This is a major investment in the Burdekin's future and I'm proud to see the Crisafulli Government delivering the essential infrastructure our community has been calling for."
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the project represented Council's ongoing commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable infrastructure for the community.
"This project is a major step forward in securing our region's long-term water supply and ensuring our residents continue to have access to safe, high-quality drinking water," Mayor Dalle Cort said.
"Council has worked closely with the Queensland Government and project partners to deliver this critical piece of infrastructure, and we acknowledge the funding support that has made this project possible."
