A bold new chapter for sport, health and community on Tasmania's North-West Coast has begun, with the official ground-breaking of the new Devonport Oval Sports Complex.
This landmark redevelopment will deliver a modern, world-class precinct where sport, wellbeing and community come together. It is the centrepiece of Devonport City Council's Priority Investment Plan for sporting infrastructure and is being delivered in partnership with the Federal and State Governments, Devonport City Council, Fairbrother Pty Ltd and St Lukes.
The $60 million project represents one of the most significant community sport and health investments in the region's history.
The precinct will be home to six sporting codes - football, cricket, athletics, cycling, basketball and netball - creating a true multi-sport hub for the North-West. For netballers and basketballers, access to greatly expanded indoor court capacity will unlock more opportunities for games, training and growth. For footballers, cricketers, cyclists and athletes, it will deliver the modern facilities they need to thrive.
The development includes a three-court indoor community hall, a three-court showcourt hall for higher-level competition, outdoor courts and recreation facilities, multi-club social and administration spaces, cricket and high-performance training facilities, expanded carparking and landscaping. It will also feature a dedicated St Lukes Wellness Hub, giving the community access to programs and support that encourage healthier living, right at the heart of their sporting precinct.
Mayor Alison Jarman said the redevelopment would transform not just the Devonport Oval, but the entire community. "This is a once-in-a-generation project that reflects the strength of partnership between all levels of government, our community and St Lukes. The Devonport Oval Sports Complex will be a place where our young people can dream big, our clubs can grow, and our whole community can come together. I want to sincerely thank the Federal and State Governments for their significant support, which has made this vision a reality."
St Lukes CEO Paul Lupo said the project would redefine the way people experience sport and wellbeing. "Today's celebration is testament to what's possible when governments come together with not-for-profits, to invest in infrastructure that brings people together and supports their health journey. The Devonport Oval Sports Complex represents a bold investment in the future of this region - a place where sport, community, and wellbeing intersect in powerful ways. We know health doesn't start in hospitals; it starts right here in communities. St Lukes is proud to be working alongside Devonport City Council on a precinct that will become a true gathering place for the broader North-West region."
The facility is being built by Tasmanian construction company, Fairbrother Pty Ltd and is expected to be complete by mid 2027.
