Building works have officially begun on the Peacock Centre redevelopment as part of the Tasmanian Government's plan to build a better mental health system.
The $9.6 million project is a key commitment to deliver integration hubs under the Tasmanian Mental Health Reform Program.
The new Peacock Centre will provide integrated and community-based mental health care, bringing together a range of care and services under one roof to support people with their recovery.
It will provide a short stay 12-bed wing for people who need extra care or integration back into the community following a hospital stay.
This new model is aimed at reducing hospital admissions and readmissions for Tasmanians living with mental health challenges.
Builders Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd have been awarded the contract to redevelop the heritage building, which sustained fire damaged in 2016.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is strongly committed to improving the quality of services for Tasmanians with mental health issues.
We are investing more than $595 million for Statewide Mental Health Services, including an additional $16 million in the 2020-21 Budget for new initiatives, and $19.8 million for the construction of 27 new mental health beds.
