I completed my Bachelor of Arts with a Major in History at the end of 2021. Before I had even finished my final assessments, I was offered a role as a Resort Ranger and Historical Tour Guide at Kingfisher Bay Resort on World Heritage Listed K'gari (Fraser Island). In this role, I was responsible for leading a variety of guided tours and presentations for visitors to the Island, where I shared educational information on the ecology, culture and history of K'gari. A particular favourite of mine was leading Historical Boat Tours of the Great Sandy Straits Biosphere Reserve; showing off the cultural heritage of the area. I was also supported in undertaking some new historical research around K'gari. I found it very rewarding to be able to research and share my passion for history with guests every day.

The skills I learned studying History at UniSC were invaluable in taking on this role. The archive research and historical interpretation experience set me up to be both confident and capable in my role. From here it is my goal to complete my Master of History and to continue into historical research.

There does tend to be a stigma around studying the Arts. Often people will turn their nose up, and doubt whether you'll ever get a decent job out of it. That is profoundly not what I have found, my Arts Degree has opened doors to opportunities I didn't even understand existed, let alone thought that I could achieve. I would advise anyone thinking about studying a Bachelor of Arts that it is a worthwhile opportunity, follow what it is that you are drawn to and passionate about studying and the opportunities will present themselves.
