BSL Urges Albanese Govt to Tackle Poverty

Brotherhood of St. Laurence

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) congratulates the Albanese Government on their re-election and looks forward to the implementation of their agenda for an inclusive and fair Australia.

BSL has long advocated for policies that support economic and social justice, and we welcome the chance to continue our work with the federal government to advance opportunities for all Australians, particularly those experiencing poverty and disadvantage.

"The coming period will shape Australia for decades to come. The international system is undergoing its sharpest shift since the end of Cold War. At the same time more people at home are at risk of being left behind and trapped in poverty. We have to take the opportunity to end the growing inequities in our society. It's vital for the next term of the Albanese Government to strengthen our economic and social compass so all Australians can live the lives they aspire to," said Dr Travers McLeod, BSL's Executive Director.

"As an organisation dedicated to an Australia free of poverty, BSL looks forward to long-term, lasting policy responses from the Albanese government that create positive change for individuals, families, and communities particularly those that are doing it toughest. We look forward to collaborating on initiatives and policies that uphold social inclusion and ensure the Prime Minister can fulfil his pledge to ensure 'no one is held back and no one is left behind'."

Dr McLeod also acknowledged the federal government's ongoing commitments to increasing the supply of affordable housing, continuing to invest in better employment services, a universal early childhood system, and improved social services.
