Today I had the pleasure of opening the 2018 Young Archies Awards at the School of Creative Arts in Hobart.
Now in its 13th year, the Young Archies showcase artistic talent from students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and provides them with a fantastic opportunity to experience what it’s like to have their artwork included as part of an impressive art exhibition.
The awards are modelled on the famous Archibald Prize and are supported by learning sequences for students.
The Arts is an important and highly valued part of the Australian Curriculum taught in our schools, allowing students to use their creativity and imagination to communicate and express themselves.
Students are free to create a portrait of a person close to them who has influenced their lives using oil, acrylic, watercolour and/or mixed media, and it’s wonderful to see such a rich and diverse array of artworks on display here today.
The awards are presented in year categories, and exhibitions are organised in schools prior to the event with four portraits then selected from each year category for the Young Archies.
I acknowledge and applaud our Tasmanian Government schools and teaching staff who help engage students in learning and contributing to the artistic experiences of our young people.
