Building Better Schools: Election Commitment Nearing Completion

The Territory Labor Government is delivering on a key election commitment with its Building Better Schools (BBS) program nearing completion.

Under the economy stimulating program, NT government, Catholic and independent schools have been given $300,000 to spend on the infrastructure project of their choice throughout the Territory Labor Government's four year term.

To date, 121 of the Territory's government schools have either had their BBS projects completed or have them underway.

In the non-government school sector, 18 have had their projects completed, and a further 10 are underway.

The program has been delivered in every Territory region and has supported hundreds of local construction jobs.

It is being delivered over four rounds, and completed projects have included upgrades to learning areas and classrooms, new shade structures and playgrounds, upgrades to student bathroom facilities, kitchens for students and staff, and new interactive learning spaces.

Moil Primary School used their BBS funding to refurbish classrooms, which included the installation of Prowise boards that have facilitated the upgrade of technology for students.

As stated by Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

"Unlike the CLP, who ripped $135 million from the education budget, the Territory Labor Government will always invest in education because it is not just the right thing to do, it's the smart thing to do for the Territory's future.

"The Territory Labor Government's number one priority is jobs for Territorians and the Building Better Schools initiative, a key election commitment, has supported hundreds of jobs for smaller businesses right across the Territory.

"Quality infrastructure underpins quality learning and these small projects are a big investment in the future of our Territory children.

"Importantly, schools have been able to decide themselves the projects they want to spend the money on to best support and enhance the learning of their students."

As stated by Moil Primary School Principal, Pam Erfurt.

"The uplift that our BBS project gave to the school went far beyond the aesthetics, resources and greatly improved functionality, it gave our staff, students and community a positive uplift that increased the pride we already had within our school community.

"It was an amazing initiative and we are truly grateful for the improvements made."
