The University of Tasmania is launching a new postgraduate business course in Launceston and Burnie set to enhance regional capability and provide an avenue for professionals to convert their experience into formal qualifications.
The Graduate Certificate in Business Studies will be delivered exclusively from the University's two northern campuses from February 2020, with online learning supplemented by intensive weekend workshops.
College of Business and Economics Executive Dean, Associate Professor Stuart Crispin said the program was designed to meet the needs of business professionals looking to further their career.
"We've developed this new course as part of our strategic vision to offer regionally-connected courses that help to build the skills and attributes required to achieve business success in regional areas," Associate Professor Crispin said.
"The Graduate Certificate in Business Studies provides a pathway for Northern business professionals wanting to take on senior leadership roles, as well as helping them qualify for future entry into our MBA program.
"It follows extensive engagement with the North and North-West business communities that identified a skills development gap in our postgraduate offerings. By developing business credentials within these regions, we will help create the right environment for innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive."
The program comprises four essential units, taught one per term over the four-term year: Fundamentals of Management; Foundations of Marketing; Financial Reporting and Analysis and Strategic Entrepreneurship.
Students will access course content online as well as attend three intensive weekend workshops per term.
"One of the most exciting features of the course is our weekend workshops, which will be delivered using a masterclass model that showcases local business operators talking about their experiences," Associate Professor Crispin said.
"Another highlight will be the weekend residential workshop at the University's Darling Harbour study centre focused on Design Thinking – a creative problem-solving process designed to build collaboration, productivity and innovative thinking in the workplace."
The other weekend workshops will be held alternately at the University's campuses in Launceston and Burnie, with complimentary twin-share accommodation for participants who need to travel. Travel and accommodation for the Design Thinking workshop in Sydney is also fully-funded.
The Graduate Certificate in Business Studies is now open for enrolments.
