While the doors may be temporarily closed, services at Bulli Community Centre will continue throughout August and September as Council undertakes important fire safety upgrades.
To ensure uninterrupted access, Council is providing pop-up facilities on site so the community can continue to receive the support and services they rely on.
The iconic northern suburbs building—originally constructed in 1928 for £5303—was officially opened as the Bulli Shire Council Chambers by AA Lysaght, M.L.A. on 1 June 1929. After the 1947 amalgamation of local councils, the building served as a library until 2009, when the new Thirroul Library and Community Centre opened.
Today, the historic building is known as Bulli Community Centre and is home to not-for-profit organisations Northern Illawarra Community Connections and Northern Illawarra Meals on Wheels. These groups deliver vital services and maintain a community garden for residents across Wollongong's northern suburbs.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said that these upgrades are essential to ensuring that the facility remains fit for the community.
"97 years and going strong! The Bulli Community Centre is an important community asset—both for its heritage value and the services it provides," Cr Brown said.
"We're committed to maintaining much-loved community spaces like this landmark building on the highway in Bulli.
"It will come as no surprise that a building of this vintage requires maintenance and upkeep to ensure it can continue its role as a vital community space for years to come," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"I'd like to acknowledge the teams at Northern Illawarra Community Connections and Meals on Wheels who are working collaboratively with Council to ensure they're able to continue their great work, while we improve their work environment."
Works commence 18 August and are expected to be completed by mid-September. Works include lighting upgrades, fire services and emergency systems. Limited parking will be available onsite during the works.
Community members are encouraged to call Northern Illawarra Community Connections on (02) 4284 7006 or Northern Illawarra Meals on Wheels on (02) 4285 6126 should they have any questions about services.
