Cable theft at Council facilities

Wyndham City is asking residents to be on the watch for suspicious behaviour following a spate of thefts of electrical supply cables at local sporting grounds and community facilities.

The thefts will cost Council thousands of dollars to repair and replace the cables, which have caused significant disruption to sporting clubs and other community sites in Wyndham.

Wyndham City Mayor Councillor Peter Maynard said: "We are concerned to see that the trend of theft of underground power cables has increased over the past three years - and is continuing to do so."

"These thefts are very concerning and result in significant work to make these facilities fully operational again."

"Council strongly condemns any illegal activity, particularly at a time when our residents are relying more than ever on local parks as a result of the COVID restrictions."

"In stealing from Council, they are stealing from Wyndham residents. We are asking our residents to please watch out for any suspicious activity at our sporting fields or facilities."

"If you see anyone doing electrical work on Council's facilities, please call Council on 1300 023 411 so that we can check they are carrying out legitimate work."

Anyone with information about the thefts should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All suspicious activity should be reported to police on 000.
