Cairns Boosts Economy Through Industry, Events

Cairns Regional Council's 2025/26 Budget prioritises economic growth with targeted investment to attract visitors, support key industries, and grow local jobs.

More than $10.5 million has been committed to sponsorships, grants, and funding aimed at building a stronger economy and more vibrant community.

Mayor Amy Eden said the budget reflects smart, responsible spending that delivers real returns.

"Tourism alone generates a total economic impact of around $1.8 billion each year and supports more than 15,000 local jobs," Cr Eden said.

"This is about smart spending, making sure we support industries and events that bring people to our city, fill hotel rooms, and keep local businesses buzzing."

Backing tourism and destination marketing

A major feature of the budget is $3.5 million in funding for Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) to continue promoting Cairns to global audiences.

"Destination marketing is fiercely competitive, and we want Cairns to be the number one location for visitors when planning a tropical getaway," Cr Eden said.

"That's why we're backing TTNQ to keep telling the world what makes our region so special."

Supporting major events

An additional $1.5 million will go towards attracting and supporting events such as IRONMAN Cairns, Crankworx, and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.

"It's not only about the economic boost, events like these make Cairns an even better place to live," Cr Eden said.

"Locals love live music, entertainment, and sport – they're part of what brings our community together. That's why it's so important we keep securing events like these."

Investing in local organisations

Nearly $400,000 has been allocated to organisations including the Cairns Taipans, Study Cairns and Superyacht Group – all of which contribute to a dynamic economy and cultural identity.

"These events and organisations bring people to Cairns and help build a sense of pride and identity," Cr Eden said.

"They create world-class experiences that leave a lasting impression on our visitors and locals."

Inspiring the next generation

Cr Eden said the benefits of investing in events and tourism extend beyond the economy.

"It's often said, 'you can't be what you can't see.' That's why we're passionate about bringing elite athletes, creatives and entrepreneurs to Cairns, to inspire the next generation," she said.

"Whether it's growing tourism, backing major events, or supporting organisations that strengthen our identity, this budget is about building an economy that works for everyone."
