Cairns continues pandemic recovery

Increased visitor numbers and falling unemployment levels underline the city's continued recovery from the COVID pandemic.

According to the latest Cairns Economic Dashboard, the unemployment rate for the broader Cairns SA4 region was 4.4% in March, compared with 6.5% one year ago.

Passenger movements at Cairns Airport have increased significantly since the borders reopened.

Domestic passenger numbers have reached pre-COVID levels and averaged more than 80,000 passenger movements per week during the month of April.

While international travel remains well below pre-pandemic levels, in a sign of improvement, close to 1,000 passengers passed through the international airport in the week beginning 26 April 2022, the most since March 2020.

Monthly Jobseeker recipients have decreased slightly from February to March – 8,920 to 8,714, while monthly job advertisements for Far North Queensland have increased from 5,563 in February to 6,483 in March.
