Wyndham City is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads - particularly during school pick-up and drop-off times and in wet weather conditions.
With the new school term beginning Monday 21 July, Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, said safety risks increased during rainy weather, especially where foot and vehicle traffic is high.
"Pedestrians, including students and carers, often rush to get out of the rain, which can lead to risky behaviour such as running across roads or stepping out from between parked cars," Cr Shaw said.
"We also see an increase in vehicle drop-offs and pick-ups during wet weather, which adds to the congestion and risk."
Cr Shaw reminded students and families to always cross at school crossings and follow the directions of crossing supervisors.
"If you are a student or carer walking home or to a car, it's even more important to cross at a school crossing and listen to the crossing supervisor during rainy weather to maintain order and safety," she said.
"Drivers also need to be extra cautious - wet roads reduce braking ability, and children can behave unpredictably in poor weather."
"We're encouraging everyone to be patient, courteous and work together to ensure students get to and from school safely."
Tips for Students Crossing Roads Safely
- Stand back from the road and wait for the whistle before crossing
- Hop off your bike or scooter and walk it across the road
- Hold onto balls - don't bounce them when near traffic
- Always follow the school crossing supervisor's instructions
