Call for inspiring women to be recognised

A new category, a $2000 scholarship and a special awards breakfast are part of Council's International Women's Day celebrations this year.

Nominations are now invited for the 2020 Cairns International Women's Day Awards, with winners to be announced at a special breakfast at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday 6 March.

This year, guests attending the Council's annual International Women's Day Breakfast will vote on the newly added People's Choice award.

"We are seeking nominations for women from all walks of life who have contributed to community, life, sport, welfare or the arts, either as a volunteer or a worker," Mayor Bob Manning said.

"There are so many women in our community who are outstanding contributors, they go about their day-to-day tasks without looking for accolades and recognition.

"If you know a woman who has added positively to the lives of others through leadership, personal or professional achievement, voluntary service or by empowering other women and girls, we want to give them the recognition they deserve."

This year's awards are presented by Cairns Regional Council in partnership with Cairns Central and Channel Seven.

The award categories are:

  • Cairns Regional Council's Woman of the Year award (open).
  • Cairns Central's Young Woman of the Year award (under 25 years old), sponsored by Cairns Central.
  • Council's $2000 Scholarship to enable a local woman to access learning and networking opportunities to benefit her career or other endeavours.
  • Channel Seven's People's Choice award, to be voted by the guests attending the breakfast.

Due to increasing popularity, the annual breakfast will be offering more tickets this year.

Seven News presenter and former local Sharon Ghidella will MC the breakfast event, which will include a fashion parade by the Cairns Central retailers, live entertainment and a lucky number ticket prize valued at $1,250. Tickets to the breakfast are available through Ticketlink.

Nomination forms are available from any branch of Cairns Libraries or Customer Service Centres or online at www.cairns.qld.gov.au.

Nominations close Monday 24 February.
