Calling local artists: Mayoral Art Exhibition entries open

Do you have an artwork that you would love to share with the community? Or perhaps you have an idea for a piece, but haven't had the opportunity to capture it on canvas?

The Mayoral Art Exhibition is a yearly event that gives local budding and professional artists a chance to showcase their talent to the broader Maroondah community.

Now in its 27th year, the exhibition is a fundraiser for the Croydon Branch of the Bone Marrow Donor Institute and is supported by Maroondah City Council and the Ringwood East/Heathmont Community Bendigo Bank.

Cr Mike Symon, Mayor of Maroondah, said this year's theme encouraged artists to look back on the pandemic and the challenges that it presented.

"The theme for 2022 is 'Reflection'," he said.

"We invite artists to explore and reflect on recent challenges; and in a time of recovery and transition, upon hopes for the future," Cr Symon said.

Artworks of all mediums are eligible to enter, including photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics.

"There are so many creative people in our community, and we want to see their interpretation of the theme in multiple mediums and forms.

"We are looking forward to seeing the different ways artists respond to the theme: will we see literal reflections? Will we see melancholic photographs? Or, will we see an uplifting painting or delicate piece of ceramic art?

"We hope that the community tackles the theme head on," Cr Symon said.

Applications close 5pm, Friday 1 April, with the chosen works announced at the exhibition opening on Thursday 28 April.

Pieces that embody the theme the most will be acquired by Bendigo Bank and for Council's permanent art collection.
