A critical incident investigation is underway and a driver has been arrested after two people died following a crash in Sydney's south west.
At 10.20am today (Saturday 14 February 2026), emergency services were called to a service station on King Georges Road, South Hurstville, following reports of a vehicle theft.
Officers attached to St George Police Area Command were told a 25-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by an unknown man before he stole the 25-year-old man's red sedan and left the scene.
A short time later, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command located the vehicle travelling on King Georges Road, Beverly Hills.
When it allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.
With assistance from PolAir and multiple police commands, the pursuit continued along the M5 Motorway, before it was terminated in the Bankstown area.
PolAir continued to track the vehicle before the sedan crashed into an Alfa Romeo sedan on the Old Hume Highway, Camden South, at about 11.10am.
The two occupants of the Alfa Romeo were treated by NSW Police and Ambulance paramedics, but both died at the scene.
They are yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the red sedan, a 31 year old man, ran from the scene of the crash on foot and was arrested a short distance away.
He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing, and will be taken to Campbelltown Police Station where inquiries will continue.
Multiple crime scenes have been established and a Critical Incident Team from Burwood Police Area Command will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents, supported by the St George Police Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
