The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Canada's Minister of International Trade, met with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Union's Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, for the third time this month on the margins of the Canada-EU Summit, held in Montréal from October 29 to 30, 2026.
Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič discussed the strong Canada-EU partnership and their shared commitment to advancing the ambitious outcomes of the summit.
They celebrated the successful conclusion of negotiations for a Canada-EU digital trade agreement, the first of its kind for Canada, highlighting it as an important step in deepening Canada-EU economic ties. The agreement will modernize the bilateral trade framework for the digital economy, complement the benefits already provided by the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, and help businesses on both sides of the Atlantic compete and grow in an increasingly digital global marketplace.
In addition, Minister Sidhu welcomed the growing defence industrial cooperation between Canada and the EU, noting the new contract awarded to the Canadian defence technology company Galvion under the EU's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument.
They also discussed the progress made on bilateral trade issues and committed to building on the momentum of this summit to advance this work.
Minister Sidhu and Commissioner Šefčovič will meet next at the upcoming Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership-EU ministerial dialogue in Hanoi, Vietnam.
