The City of Canada Bay is calling on the NSW Government to commit to fully funded and fast-tracked infrastructure to support the 15,000 new homes announced today for the Burwood North Metro precinct.
Mayor Michael Megna said the scale of the proposed rezoning - covering area in both Burwood and City of Canada Bay Councils - will place unprecedented pressure on local roads, transport, schools, hospitals, and public spaces unless urgent investment is made now.
"We're talking about a development equivalent to a brand-new suburb," Mayor Megna said. "Our residents expect and deserve concrete plans, clear timelines, and the funding to match."
The Council is demanding immediate commitments to major upgrades to Parramatta Road, expanded public transport services and capacity, beautification of streetscapes and public spaces, additional investment in local schools, and upgrades to Concord Hospital and other essential services.
"We recognise the importance of new housing to address Sydney's shortage - and we have already exceeded our housing targets."
"We've done the heavy lifting on housing. Now it's time for the State Government to do the heavy lifting on infrastructure. Growth without amenity is not sustainable."
Mayor Megna said Canada Bay welcomes the State Government's offer to work in collaboration with Council.
"We hold out hope when it comes to collaboration on infrastructure - but make no mistake, we will continue to advocate forcefully for the services and facilities our community needs."
The City of Canada Bay will monitor the master planning process closely to ensure the delivery of housing is matched step-for-step with infrastructure and services.
