Canada Names New Ukraine Ambassador

Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced the appointment of Natalka Cmoc as Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine. She replaces Larisa Galadza.

Canada's response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine builds on our deep connection to the Ukrainian people and understanding of Ukraine. This critical relationship can only be made possible through diplomatic engagement on the ground and working side by side with our friends and allies. Canada's relationship with Ukraine is ironclad: we have stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine since long before the Russian invasion began. Canada remains a strong partner as Ukrainians continue to fight for their sovereignty and independence and will be there to support Ukraine through its recovery and reconstruction.

The appointment of Ms. Cmoc reflects Canada's commitment to this important relationship. She is a career expert on Ukraine with a wealth of experience and insight into Canada's multi-faceted support to the country, including Canada's implementation of democracy programming prior to the illegal Russian annexation of Crimea, the creation of Operation UNIFIER and Canadian monitoring of Ukrainian elections following the 2015 Presidential campaign.

A Ukrainian speaker, Ms. Cmoc has deep connections to the Ukrainian community in Ukraine and in Canada, and she is ready to help deepen Canada-Ukraine ties at all levels. She will serve as Canada's eyes and ears in Kyiv, and ensure that Canada is able to continue to support Ukraine through this difficult time and for the long term.
