On October 22, 2026, Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson and Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar met in Ankara, Türkiye to discuss opportunities to grow bilateral cooperation in the field of energy.
The Ministers acknowledged that the global energy sector is experiencing a period of profound change, marked by geopolitical tensions, volatile markets, economic fragmentation, AI-driven demand, and the mounting challenge of climate change. The Ministers have committed to enhance bilateral cooperation building on complementary strengths between Canada and Türkiye aiming to bolster the resilience of their respective energy sectors to these changes.
The Ministers emphasized the importance of the energy transition and of building secure, reliable, affordable, and diversified energy systems which support economic growth, energy security, and long-term prosperity. They acknowledged the importance of supporting clean energy technologies, industrial development, national competitiveness, and resilient global supply chains, and welcomed the potential for Canada and Türkiye to work together in advancing these objectives.
The Ministers agreed to work together to strengthen commercial cooperation and encourage investment in the context of the broader Canada-Türkiye Strategic Partnership.
Trade and Investment
The Ministers welcome increased trade, investment, and economic cooperation in energy and natural resource sectors of mutual interest through institutional partnerships, and initiatives that support innovation and sustainable growth. They underscore the value of fostering new opportunities and strengthening commercial ties for companies in both countries.
Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)
The Ministers agreed to leverage Canada's growing LNG export capacity, given global supply shortages and rising prices that are affecting energy affordability. They agreed to facilitate further discussions between Canadian LNG project proponents and potential long-term off-takers. Such engagement could help identify potential LNG procurement arrangements that could, in turn, contribute to Türkiye's energy security by easing global supply shortages and price volatility, and provide security of supply.
Nuclear Energy Cooperation
The Ministers noted the role of nuclear technology in enhancing energy security, supporting economic growth, and advancing clean energy objectives. They welcomed the mutual interest in exploring cooperation opportunities in civil nuclear energy based on Canadian nuclear technology. They also encouraged further dialogue between relevant government officials, regulators, research and technical institutions, and industry stakeholders.
Clean Power
The Ministers expressed support for the role of renewable energy and clean technologies to advance the global net-zero transition. They discussed the role renewables can play in enhancing grid stability, diversifying energy mixes, and securing supply chains. The Ministers agreed to explore how to enhance private-sector investments in renewables, and the emerging possibilities of carbon capture and storage technologies. The Ministers further agreed to explore cooperation on next-generation geothermal technologies, including advanced closed-loop geothermal systems, through the exchange of knowledge, experience and technical expertise.
Mining for sustainable energy
The Ministers agreed to advance collaboration on strengthening minerals supply chains by promoting bilateral trade and investment across the mining value chain, including exploration and services, such as drilling, laboratory analysis, resource modelling and reporting in line with international standards such as CRIRSCO, as well as partnerships between companies and industry organizations, including in battery minerals and technologies.
The Ministers expressed support for engaging in industry programs to raise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and share best practices on environmental stewardship and responsible mining practices, including through Türkiye's adoption of the Mining Association of Canada's Towards Sustainable Mining standards and attendance at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference.
The Ministers agreed to explore opportunities for collaboration between the Geological Survey of Canada and Türkiye's General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration in areas of mutual interest. Potential areas of collaboration may include public geoscience in support of mineral and energy research, geological hazards and other emerging geoscience priorities.
Multilateral Cooperation
The Ministers underscored the value of cooperation in multilateral fora to advance common objectives, promote open and transparent markets, and address shared global energy challenges in the transition to low carbon energy, energy security, and minerals supply chain resilience.
This Joint Statement is signed in Ankara on 22/10/2026 AD, in triplicate in the Turkish, English and French languages, all texts being equally valid.
