A 35-year-old Gungahlin man has been sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment for accessing and possessing images and videos of child abuse material following his arrival into Australia.
The man was charged on 18 October 2024, after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers selected the man for a baggage examination at Sydney airport after he arrived on a flight from Japan.
Officers found over 150 images, several PDF files and 12 videos on the man's devices containing child abuse material as well as evidence identifying payments to a known child exploitation facilitator, he was then subsequently arrested by the ABF.
The man pled guilty in the Downing Centre Central District court on 19 November 2025 to one count of accessing child abuse material using a carriage service contrary to s474.22(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995. The sentence also includes a Child Protection Order for eight years.
Acting ABF Investigations Superintendent Mark Rea said the ABF will continue to use every tool available to them to ensure children are protected from exploitation.
"Our officers acted on precise intelligence that flagged this passenger for examination which ultimately led to the discovery of deeply disturbing material and has now resulted in a successful prosecution," Acting Superintendent Rea said.
"This is a stark reminder that our borders are not just about goods and people, they are a frontline for safeguarding vulnerable children and we are proud of the role our officers played in bringing this offender to justice."
