Rockhampton Regional Council will pause major upgrade works on Canning Street over the Christmas period, with the road reopening to two‑way traffic and limited parking for the two-week break.
The pause is due to Christmas closures, with works recommencing from Monday 5 January, including a return to one‑way traffic and the closure of parking on Canning Street.
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the project, which began in October, has been steadily progressing with stormwater works towards Albert Street.
"Although pockets of rock have slowed work slightly, the team has continued to progress," Cr Taylor said.
"Stormwater drainage has been the focus since the project started, with works moving along the eastern side, towards Albert Street.
"At the corner of Canning Street and Cambridge Street, the watermain relocation was delayed due to rock, but the team has now completed the relocation, including cleaning and connecting the new line."
Conflicts between the stormwater line and existing watermains will require another watermain relocation across the full width of Albert Street.
"Council's Fitzroy River Water will assist with this aspect of works, and this relocation is expected to be tackled in the New Year," Cr Taylor said.
"The relocation will affect access and traffic, as we will need to implement half‑road closures or a full road closure.
"We will update motorists and the community ahead of these closures once crews return in 2026."
The Canning Street upgrade spans from Voss Street to Cambridge Street and will deliver a safer, more accessible corridor for all road users.
The works include a full road reconstruction to improve surface quality and traffic flow, along with new 2.5‑metre‑wide footpaths on both sides of the street for pedestrian safety and accessibility.
To further improve safety, two‑metre‑wide pedestrian refuges will be installed on both Albert Street and Canning Street, making it easier for people to cross these busy routes.
The final stage of the project will see three Rosy Trumpet Trees and eight Lucious Water Gum trees planted along the western side at the Cambridge Street end, providing shade for the new footpath once established.
