Cardinia Shire Council has entered into a short-term arrangement with recycling processor, Polytrade Recycling, to accept and process a proportion of the shire's kerbside recycling collections.
Despite the limited capacity in the industry, which has made it particularly challenging to find an alternative recycling processor, Polytrade has confirmed it has capacity to accept a significant proportion of the recyclable materials collected from Cardinia Shire.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Graeme Moore said the short-term agreement means a significant amount of Cardinia Shire's recyclable items will once again be recycled instead of going to landfill.
"We acknowledge this isn't an ideal situation, but this new contract will ensure that as much of our kerbside recyclables as possible will once again be diverted from landfill.
"We remain absolutely committed to finding a sustainable, long-term solution for the management of recycling for our community," Cr Moore said.
"Polytrade will also be working towards upgrading its facilities to accept the remaining recycling collected from Cardinia Shire Council in the near future.
"Thank you once again to everyone for your understanding and patience while we worked to find alternative arrangements and to limit the amount of recyclables going to landfill."

- Your collection days remain the same.
- Soft plastics (e.g. plastic bags, wrappers, bread bags, etc.) will not be accepted. Soft plastics can be recycled through REDcycle at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
