Care Economy's Role in Empowering Tunisian Women

Despite legislative reforms and initiatives undertaken in Tunisia, women's economic participation remains limited, with women representing only 25.49% of the labour force compared to 67.15% of men, while they are often concentrated in low-paid and informal jobs.

From 27 to 29 January, ESCWA and UN Women organized a hybrid consultation on the care economy in Tunisia to raise awareness around its importance in achieving sustainable development and to launch an initiative aimed at identifying policy priorities to advance the care economy in the country.

The consultation brought together key stakeholders, including parliamentarians, relevant ministries, civil society organizations, academia, and international organizations. Discussions highlighted the central role of the care economy in achieving sustainable development and emphasized the strong interlinkages between care policies and broader public policy frameworks.
