Dementia Australia applauds the Victorian Government for acknowledging the significant contribution by carers in our community, demonstrated by the inaugural role of Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers.
Dementia Australia CEO, Maree McCabe said the new ministerial portfolio elevates the profile of carers as a priority, especially for all those caring for the more than 107,000 Victorians living with dementia.
"Carers enable so many people to remain in the community and to stay engaged while surrounded by their families and loved ones. The care they provide is key to increasing family, social and community inclusion for people living with dementia," Ms McCabe said.
"Support is crucial to reducing the stress and health impacts that are often inherent for carers. With more than 300,000 Victorians projected to be living with dementia by 2058, the number of carers needed will also dramatically increase.
"We welcome The Hon Luke Donnellan MP to the position and look forward to discussing the needs of carers and how we can support him in making a difference to the lives of all Victorians impacted by dementia."
Dementia Australia would also like to congratulate The Hon Jenny Mikakos MLC, Minister for Health, Anthony Carbines MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Health, and Lizzie Blandthorn MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Carers, for their new roles.
