New parents and expectant parents in Hobsons Bay can receive up to $75 off the purchase price of reusable nappies, thanks to a community budget submission via Pitch Your Idea.

The Reusable Nappy Rebate trial alleviates some of the up-front costs of purchasing reusable nappies and encourages residents to consider giving reusable nappies a go.

Hobsons Bay resident Deborah Frenkel was inspired to submit her reusable nappy rebate idea to the budget consultation process after she switched to reusable nappies with her second child and realised, they weren't as difficult to use as she thought.

She figured she was not the only environmentally concerned, but time poor new parent that needed an extra nudge to try using reusable nappies.

In addition to the benefit of avoiding generating waste and being environmentally friendly, over time reusable nappies cost about half as much as disposable nappies

A recent Monash University study (2020) predicted that by 2025 Hobsons Bay will be using over 64 million nappies every single year.

In addition to the Reusable Nappy Rebate trial, Council is also providing tips on how to reduce the impact of disposable nappies in landfill.

The Reusable Nappy Rebate trial is now open and applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis until funds allocated to the trial are exhausted.

A proof of purchase after 6 September 2021 must be provided.
