The Tasmanian Liberal Government has decided that the temporary arrangements for cashless buses and the bus fare amnesty will be extended for all public school bus and general access services until Sunday 5 July 2020.
These arrangements were due to expire on Sunday 31 May 2020.
The extension will provide extra time for passengers to access a smartcard and non-cash credit top up arrangements (where available), or other options for cashless payment.
Passengers who still do not have a smartcard should apply for one from their bus operator where available during the fare amnesty.
Students travelling on a school bus without a cashless ticketing option are encouraged to purchase a ten-trip ticket to minimise the frequency of cash handling on the bus when the fare amnesty has ended.
Free travel during this period is not an invitation to undertake additional travel – passengers should restrict themselves to essential journeys.
Passengers are reminded to practice good hand hygiene when travelling on buses and minimise the contact they make with surfaces inside the bus.
Where possible, passengers should board and exit the bus from the rear door and must always comply with any requests from drivers.
All Tasmanians are reminded to follow the rules and that includes not using public transport if they are supposed to be in isolation or are unwell.
