Castle Hill Road will re-open to vehicles from tomorrow, with Townsville City Council contractors wrapping up slope stabilisation works to a section of the iconic hill.
Contractors Shamrock Civil will finalise works on Wednesday, requiring a single lane closure for the day, before works resume at the Stanley Street cutting on Thursday, where a temporary detour remains in place.
Acting Mayor and divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney thanked the community for their ongoing co-operation and patience.
"As we outlined a few weeks ago, works at the Stanley Street cutting had to be placed on hold due to the need to complete unforeseen design changes," Cr Greaney said.
"This gave us the opportunity to deploy our contractors to Castle Hill Road, where over the last two weeks they have successfully completed those necessary works.
"They will now return to Stanley Street, with works expected to take another eight weeks.
"A detour remains in place around the cutting, so we thank both the residents and commuters for their patience."
Council's significant investment in inner-city stabilisation works, at the cost of $2.71 million, follows the 2025 wet season and subsequent stability inspections.
The works include undertaking rockfall protection and slope stabilisation remedial works along both the Stanley Street cutting and Castle Hill Road, and are necessary to ensure the safety of road users for years to come.
Road closures and detours remain in place with inbound traffic in the city directed to Denham Street. Traffic originating from North Ward is also being redirected to Denham St to access the city.
Further updates will be provided once the works are complete and detours have been removed.
