Work is about to begin on the Frederick Street Precinct Project - a transformative streetscape upgrade that will revitalise Frederick Street and Mechanics Lane at Castlemaine.
This landmark project will create a vibrant public space with improved pedestrian and cycling access, enhanced safety, and new opportunities for public art and community connection.
The redevelopment will support Castlemaine's Town Centre Precinct, boosting economic activity and improving access to key community facilities.
The project includes:
- Upgraded kerbs and pavement surfaces to improve pedestrian accessibility
- Shared zones for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles
- Additional lighting to improve public safety
- Greening of the town centre with new trees and plants
- Burying overhead power lines
- Improved access to the railway station and bus zones
- A new outdoor event space
- Integration of Djaara art and culture
The $12.4 million project is funded by $12.19 million from the Australian Government's regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP) and was identified as a priority in the Castlemaine Streetscape Plan and Design Standards 2020.
The remaining funding of just under $250,000 is provided by Mount Alexander Shire Council.
Works will begin on communications and power infrastructure upgrades in February 2026 and will be followed by staged construction.
Completion is expected by March 2027.
