CCTV released after cabbie assaulted, hit by his own taxi at Wollongong

Police are appealing for the public's help after taxi driver was assaulted – then hit by his own cab – at Wollongong earlier this month.

A 56-year-old taxi driver picked up a woman just after 3am on Sunday 18 September 2022, at the intersection of Crown Street and Gladstone Avenue, Wollongong.

The woman directed the driver to Abercrombie Street, West Wollongong, before allegedly threatening him with a knife and stealing the taxi, and driving at – then hitting – the driver.

The taxi then crashed into a fence of a nearby property on Alkera Street, before the cab was later found abandoned on Euroka Street.

The driver was taken to Wollongong Hospital with back, foot and hand injuries.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District were notified and commenced inquiries into the incident.

Detectives have now released CCTV of a woman they believe may be able to assist with the investigation. The woman depicted is described as being of Caucasian in appearance, aged 20 to 30, with a slim build and blonde hair.

At the time, she was wearing a black puffer jacket, dark pants and was carrying a black backpack.

As investigations continue, police are appealing for anyone who may have information or dashcam footage captured at Euroka, Alkera or Abercrombie Streets, Wollongong, shortly after 3am on Sunday 18 September 2022, to come forward.

Anyone with information, or who recognises the woman in the CCTV, is urged to call Wollongong Police on (02) 4226 7899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
