The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service is responding to an increase in building fires across the NT.
From 1 July 2024 - 30 June 2025 there were 36 building fires recorded in Alice Springs.
The 12 months prior saw 24 building fires in Alice Springs.
As the cooler weather continues in the Red Centre, residents are urged to stay warm safely to reduce the risk of residential fires.
You can stay safe by:
Checking your smoke alarm annually on or around 1 June, which is Smoke Alarm Action Day, and replacing the batteries if necessaryKeeping clothes, towels and flammable materials 2 metres away from heaters and fireplacesRegularly removing lint build up from dryersHaving your chimney inspected and cleaned regularlyEnsuring power points and power boards are not overloaded, and power cords are not frayed or damagedNever leaving cooking unattendedGoing outside to smoke.
Residents are also encouraged to practice their fire escape plan with all members of their household.
