Rockhampton Regional Council is encouraging drivers across the region to take five to remember the Fatal Five during Queensland Road Safety Week, which kicks off today.

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the week focuses on promoting road safety across the state.

"This year's theme, One Team Queensland, highlights the importance of everyone working together to keep our roads safe," Cr Taylor said.

"Our goal remains the same — we want every Queenslander to get home safely."

Queensland Road Safety Week also highlights the impact of road trauma that continues to be felt deeply across the state.

"Tragically, Queensland recorded 303 road fatalities in 2024 — a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety," Cr Taylor said.

"In addition, 7,565 people were seriously injured on our roads last year which has a ripple effect in families, workplaces, and communities."

Cr Taylor urged the community to prioritise safer driving habits this week to help reduce the number of lives affected by road crashes.

"Here in the Rockhampton Region, let's work together to make our streets safer and drive down the toll of road trauma," Cr Taylor said.

"Living in our beautiful region comes with unique challenges. Drivers need to take extra care on rural roads and be mindful of loose rocks, sharp bends, wandering wildlife, and unpredictable weather," Cr Taylor said.

"It's also important to drive cautiously when towing caravans, campervans, or trailers — and to be patient when sharing the road with those who are."

The Fatal Five reminders:

  • Wear a seatbelt
  • Don't drive while tired
  • Don't speed – obey the speed limit
  • Don't drive under the influence of alcohol
  • Don't drive distracted – stay alert
