Cessnock City Library, in partnership with the Cessnock Family History Group, invites residents to delve into their past during a special Family History Week event on Monday, August 11, from 10am – 12pm at Cessnock Library.
This unique free event will feature two distinct sessions designed to empower community members in their genealogical journeys: "It's In Our DNA" and "The Best FREE Family History Resources – That You've Never Heard Of!"
The first session, aptly titled "It's In Our DNA", will provide a brief yet comprehensive overview of the DNA process, with a particular focus on AncestryDNA. Attendees will learn how to get started with DNA testing, understand the variety of information received, make crucial links to their family tree, and discover why DNA is unique to each individual.
Following this, "The Best FREE Family History Resources – That You've Never Heard Of!" session will shine a light on valuable genealogical tools often overlooked. While many researchers frequently stick to familiar online databases, this presentation will reveal lesser-known, and often not-online, records and websites. Participants will specifically discover two exceptional resources from the NSW State Archives collection that can significantly aid their family history research.
Library Services Coordinator, Rose-marie Walters shared her enthusiasm about the upcoming event and the benefits for the local community.
"Family History Week is a great time for our community to connect with their heritage and uncover their unique stories," said Ms Walters.
"These sessions offer fantastic insights, from understanding your genetic blueprint to uncovering free resources you didn't even know existed."
"It's a wonderful opportunity for anyone curious about their roots, whether they're just starting out or looking to break through a research brick wall."
Bookings are essential for these popular sessions. Secure your place by visiting the 'What's On' section of the library website
