Firefighters were called to extinguish two piles of mulch that had caught fire on Old Melbourne Road in Maryvale at around 8am on Monday, 20 July.

Eight CFA units from Traralgon East, Traralgon West, Hazelwood, Yallourn North, Churchill, Morwell and Tyers arrived to support Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) at the scene.
Crews worked to successfully douse the mulch piles, both at around 15mx20m in size, using Class A foam and water.
Tyers Fire Brigade 1st Lieutenant Ross Wisewould said CFA firefighters worked efficiently to relay water to supply the FRV aerial appliance during the fire attack.
"Mulch can smoulder deeply so we had to ensure we had extinguished the area effectively," Lt Wisewould said.

The fire was contained to the two mulch piles and incident was stopped at 12.34pm however some crews remained on scene longer to continue blacking out the affected piles and ensure no further flare ups.
"This was the first opportunity we had to support FRV on the fire ground and we worked together as normal," Lt Wisewould said.
"The comradery was still strong, the operation was seamless and we look forward to working alongside FRV to protect the community at many more incidents."
