The Tasmanian Government will work with carriers to ensure essential transport needs are met, in light of REX's decision to withdraw flights on the Melbourne to Devonport route.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said REX's decision was disappointing for the Devonport community and the wider North West.
"We recognise the importance of these services for local residents, businesses and visitors," Minster Vincent said.
"Any loss of air connectivity is felt strongly in regional areas and we understand the concern this decision will create."
REX has advised that these changes are being driven by low demand and significant increases in operating costs, particularly jet fuel, which are affecting airlines across Australia.
Adjustments are being made across the aviation sector, particularly on smaller regional routes where services are more vulnerable to cost pressures.
Minister Vincent said while the withdrawal of REX from Devonport was disappointing, Devonport will continue to be serviced daily by Qantas.
