Charges - Recklessly Endangering Serious Harm - Angurugu

Groote Eylandt Police have arrested a 17-year-old male following an alleged incident in Angurugu on Friday 30 November.

Around 11:45pm two people were driving their vehicle through Angurugu when they observed the teenager walking in their direction armed with a hammer and a machete. The pair told police that as they drove towards the male he threw the hammer at them, Northern Territory Police say

Two occupants in a second vehicle saw the teenager and went to speak to him. As the second vehicle slowed down, the male allegedly threw the hammer, smashing through the vehicle’s window, before throwing the machete at a third vehicle.

Police located the teenager and discovered he was distressed about a family argument. Family members arrived while police were negotiating with the youth and he became more distressed, arming himself with three spears which he threw at the group and the police. The youth was immediately arrested without further incident. No person was injured in the incident.

He was charged with:

  • 3x recklessly endangering serious harm
  • 2x endanger occupants of vehicle
  • 1x damage to property
  • 1x going armed in public

The male was granted conditional bail to appear at the Alyangula Youth Justice Court on 19 December 2018.
