Eligible local cat owners can now access subsidised desexing and free microchipping following a partnership between the City of Mount Gambier, the National Desexing Network (NDN) and participating local veterinary clinics.
The program delivers on key objectives of Council's Dog and Cat Management Plan 2024 - 2028 and assists to enforce the provisions of the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.
"Council is committed to working with the community to promote the effective management of dogs and cats and this includes encouraging desexing," City of Mount Gambier General Manager Corporate and Regulatory Services Jane Fetherstonhaugh said.
A new Cat By-Law, informed by strong community feedback, was endorsed by Council late last year. It outlines that from 1 July 2026 all cats must be registered, microchipped by three months of age, and desexed by six months of age. To help residents meet the compulsory requirements, Council is providing targeted financial support through the subsidised program to support responsible ownership and affordability.
"With the Cat By-Law making microchipping and desexing compulsory from July, we're making it easier for concession card holders and residents in financial hardship to comply," Mrs Fetherstonhaugh said.
The Cat By-Law, Dog and Cat Management Plan, and the NDN initiative will work collectively to improve community outcomes by reducing semi-owned and unowned cat populations while assisting residents to be responsible pet owners.
"Council values the contribution of rescue organisations and will continue to work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure the community has access to responsible and sustainable cat management options," Mrs Fetherstonhaugh said.
Eligibility to take part in the program is limited to vulnerable or disadvantaged households, veterans, pension and health care card holders, and individuals adopting a stray or semi-owned cat. A maximum of three vouchers per household applies.
Eligible cat owners can contact NDN directly to obtain a voucher, which can be used to reduce the cost of desexing and microchipping with the following out-of-pocket costs:
- $50.00 per female cat
- $25.00 per male cat
