Child care rebate accounting issue

The following comments are to be attributed to Director Community Life Robyn Stevens:

In July 2018, amendments were made to the eligibility criteria for the Federal Child Care Scheme.

During the initial stages of the implementation, the City identified some accounting issues relating to child care fees and rebates at one of our child care centres.

The issues were addressed following a full investigation. Councillors were informed of the matter.

There has been no allegation of fraud in relation to these anomalies.

Given the nature of the matter, it was not referred to Victoria Police.

The City has undertaken an external review of child care fees and rebates which gave all other child care centres a clean bill of health.

The issues arose due to a delay in implementing and communicating rebate changes applied in new complex eligibility criteria set by the federal government.

No families were overcharged or left out of pocket due to this delay.
