Child injured after finding replica air pistol, NSW

Police are reminding the community to stay vigilant with firearm safety after a child was injured in the state’s north, NSW Police say.

About 7pm on Tuesday 24 May 2016, a three-year-old girl was residing at a property on North Creek Road, Ballina when she allegedly found an unsecured replica air pistol (BB gun).

The three-year-old girl allegedly discharged the weapon, shooting herself in the leg.

A 39-year-old man took the child to Ballina District Hospital, where she underwent surgery to remove the projectile.

Officers attached to Richmond Local Area Command were notified and attended the hospital and commenced an investigation.

Police seized the replica pistol.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing, with charges expected to be laid.
