Women in Law, Judiciary Enhance Leadership Skills

OSCE

Women representatives from law enforcement and judicial bodies developed their leadership skills, sharing their experiences and strengthening professional networks during a training course in Tashkent on 2-3 July 2026.

The event, which also brought together representatives of government institutions and relevant organizations, was organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan (PCUz) in co-operation with the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR), the Committee of Family and Women, and the Law Enforcement Academy. It provided an opportunity for discussing practical approaches to promoting women's leadership and career development.

Opening remarks were delivered by Akmal Saidov, Director of the NCHR; Ambassador Antti Karttunen, PCUz Head of Office; Svetlana Artikova, Deputy Prosecutor General; and Yevgeniy Kolenko, First Deputy Head of the Law Enforcement Academy.

Ambassador Karttunen emphasized the empowering role of effective leadership.

"Leadership is a service, not a privilege," he said. "Too often, we think that a team exists to serve its leader. In reality, the leader exists to serve the team-to remove obstacles, create opportunities and enable others to perform at their very best."

The training covered the requirements and qualifications for being a leader, understanding one's leadership strengths, confident and effective communication, and building professional networks through mutual support.

Participants also explored ways to overcome professional burnout and develop strategies to advance women in law enforcement and judicial bodies. The agenda combined interactive exercises, practical discussions and the exchange of international good practices.
