Chinese Taipei Donates $650K for Economic Cooperation

APEC

Chinese Taipei has contributed USD 650,000 in voluntary funding to support APEC initiatives aimed at enhancing regional human security, promoting women's economic empowerment and reinforcing evidence-based policymaking across the Asia-Pacific region.

The contribution was confirmed in a memorandum of understanding signed by Jonathan Chien-Yuan Sun, Chinese Taipei's APEC Senior Official and Eduardo Pedrosa, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat prior to the APEC Informal Senior Officials' Meeting.

"Since joining APEC in 1991, Chinese Taipei has participated on an equal footing with all member economies and has made substantial, concrete contributions to APEC's work," said Sun.

"To date, Chinese Taipei has contributed over USD 13 million to APEC funds and the Policy Support Unit and has spearheaded the establishment of the Human Security Sub-Fund and the Women and the Economy Sub-Fund, actively supporting the capacity building efforts of other member economies."

"Chinese Taipei reaffirms its commitment to strengthening APEC through voluntary contributions, public-private partnerships, and other forms of collaboration, with the goal of helping advance the early realization of the Putrajaya Vision 2040," Sun added.

Around USD 300,000 of the funding will support projects that help APEC economies better protect their people and systems from major risks and disruptions. This includes improving preparedness for health emergencies like pandemics, building stronger disaster response systems and improving energy security so communities have reliable access to power.

Another USD 250,000 will be allocated to initiatives that support more women to fully participate in the economy, whether as workers, entrepreneurs, leaders, or business owners.

And finally, a portion of the funds will be directed to the APEC Policy Support Unit, the research and analysis arm of APEC, to strengthen its ability to provide high-quality, evidence-based policy recommendations.

"This contribution from Chinese Taipei provides essential momentum to our ongoing efforts in capacity building," said Pedrosa. "Funding for targeted sub-funds and the Policy Support Unit enables APEC to develop robust policy recommendations and high-impact initiatives that benefit all member economies." Pedrosa added.

Projects are a vital part of the APEC process. They help translate the policy directions of APEC economic leaders and ministers into actions which contribute to creating tangible benefits for people living in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC provides funding for over 100 projects each year, with around USD22.2 million available in 2025.

Since the establishment of the APEC Secretariat in 1993, more than 2,500 projects have been implemented.
