Citiplace childcare centre to close

The City of Perth Childcare Centre will close on 30 September 2022.

The City of Perth Council voted to close the centre on Tuesday night and will work with the 53 families impacted to find new placements.

The centre, which is licensed for 71 places only offers 53 and runs at a significant loss to the City.

The Citiplace Childcare Centre was opened by the City of Perth in January 1989 and at the time was one of the first childminding facilities in the city.

More than three decades later, there are approximately 10 centres within 2km of Citiplace.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said when the centre opened it was a much-needed service but over time more centres had opened meaning there was no longer the same demand.

"In the City, we are lucky to have many options. In fact, a recent report into childcare across Australia recognised Perth City was one of six areas in Western Australia which had enough places to meet demand" he said.

"I would like to thank all of our City of Perth staff who worked at the Centre over three decades and all those families who used its services."
