City of Darwin has today started installing a Rainbow Roundabout at the corner of Daly Street and The Esplanade to mark Darwin Pride Festival.
The Roundabout will take the form of multi-coloured plants and flowers, representing the rainbow pride flag and symbolising solidarity with the LGBTIQA movement.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis embraced the idea when first approached in 2018 and the Rainbow Roundabout being installed this year demonstrates an on-going commitment to support the Festival.
"The Rainbow Roundabout is a wonderful reflection of both the diversity in our community and City of Darwin's commitment to supporting diversity," said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.
The Roundabout will be transformed by the addition of the colourful plants throughout, which will be in full bloom for the Pride Festival in September.
"It will be eye-catching and unique, attributes we should all respect and celebrate in each other."
Chair, Darwin Pride (NT) Inc Jenny Smith said she was delighted that City of Darwin was supporting the event "The Rainbow Roundabout is a way for the community to embrace the spirit of the Darwin Pride Festival."
"It will be a colourful landmark everyone can enjoy year round."
Colours being incorporated into the roundabout reflect those in the Pride flag and each has a special meaning - red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony and purple for spirit.
Work on the Rainbow Roundabout will continue from today through Friday and will be maintained by City of Darwin in preparation for Pride Week September 19-22nd.
