City Of Darwin Set To Expand EV Charging Opportunities

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is inviting proposals from suitably qualified providers to deliver a network of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the municipality.

The Request for Proposal seeks a long-term partner to design, build, finance, install, operate, maintain and monitor EV charging infrastructure on Council land, supporting the growing uptake of electric vehicles across the Northern Territory.

Requests for Proposal open today Tuesday 12 May and close on Tuesday 2 June 2026.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor, Peter Styles, said the initiative is a key step in preparing the city for a low-emissions transport future.

"Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and it's important that Darwin keeps pace by providing accessible, reliable charging infrastructure for our community," Mr Styles said.

"This initiativeis an opportunity for industry to partner with City of Darwin to deliver innovative solutions that make it easier for residents, visitors and businesses to choose electric vehicles.

Guided by its Movement Strategy 2030 and Climate Emergency Strategy 2030, City of Darwin is committed to enabling sustainable transport options and supporting a cleaner, greener future.

By inviting the private sector to propose suitable locations and solutions, City of Darwin aims to expand EV charging access across Darwin while ensuring high-quality, future-ready infrastructure," he said.

The expansion of EV charging stations is expected to deliver a range of benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved local air quality, as well as greater accessibility and convenience for EV drivers across Darwin.

It will also support local economic activity, tourism and emerging mobility industries and increase attractiveness of Darwin as a smart and sustainable city.

Using an EV reduces reliance on imported fuel, improving resilience to fuel price fluctuations and supply disruptions.

City of Darwin is seeking a provider aligned with its strategic vision to help deliver these outcomes for the community.
