Mayor Joe Awada visited local schools this week to thank them for registering to participate in Clean Up Australia Day and reinforce how important this day is for the community and the environment.
Last year Council disposed approximately 3,500 kilos of rubbish collected by volunteers at sites from across Bayside.
Talking to the students from Arncliffe and Eastlakes Public Schools, Mayor Awada, said "to give you an idea of how much that it is, if we spread it out, it would fill about seven full sized basketball courts."
"Removing that much litter from the environment makes a huge difference to Bayside," he said.
"Clean Up Australia Day is a great initiative and it's good to see the Bayside community getting involved to clean up our beautiful beach and parklands," Mayor Awada said.
Bayside Council is once again encouraging residents and local businesses to get involved.
Clean Up Australia Day for businesses is Tuesday 2 March, schools on Friday 5 March and community groups on Sunday 7 March.
Families, schools and local business all have an opportunity to showcase their environmental credentials by getting involved in Australia's biggest clean up.
To take part you need to start or join a registered clean up group on the Clean Up Australia Day website.
Bayside Council will work with all local registered community, school and business sites in the area to provide assistance as required.
