Rocherlea residents took the opportunity to dispose of household waste for free today as part of a trial program by the Rocherlea Action Group.

Spring Clean Rocherlea is a community-led project which aimed to educate residents about waste and recycling, provide an opportunity to dispose of household waste, and to create new community links through a free barbecue and children's activities.

The Rocherlea Action Group comprises members of the Rocherlea community and a range of service providers including The Shed, City of Launceston, the Northern Suburbs Community Centre, the Country

Women's Association, the Rocherlea Football Club, Communities for Children, Community Housing, and Launceston City Mission's Project North.

The Spring Clean Rocherlea event was also supported by Veolia, Sims Metal and Altus Traffic.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said he hoped Spring Clean Rocherlea was an opportunity for residents to dispose of waste and to learn about waste diversion options.

"We know there can sometimes be barriers for members of the community who don't have a vehicle, physical capacity or other means to dispose of household waste, and Spring Clean Rocherlea offers a solution for that," Mayor Garwood said.

"Residents were able to dispose of items like car tyres, mattresses, white goods and general household waste, and we were also able to divert salvageable items for re-sale through Uptipity or for use in other circular economy initiatives.

"The City of Launceston is proud to support the Rocherlea Action Group and its partners for Spring Clean Rocherlea."
