As part of Council's ongoing commitment to improving water quality in our waterways, we upgraded the Elster Creek gross pollutant trap (GPT) in Yalukit William Nature Reserve near the New and Rusden Street intersection.
GPTs are typically installed near drainage outfalls and help to prevent rubbish from entering sensitive water environments by capturing litter and debris. There are 20 GPTs across the municipality and most were installed (approximately) 25-years ago. With advancements in technology, older GPTs are less effective in preventing pollution entering waterways.
The upgraded vortex-flow GPT will help to minimise clogging, enabling a more reliable system to manage stormwater pollution before it enters Port Phillip Bay. Council will use suction trucks to regularly clean the new 5.33m high and 2.2m wide cylindrical structure to maximise its efficiency.
Our upstream neighbours, Glen Eira City Council, contributed $80,000 towards funding the project, which was successfully delivered within the $270,000 budget.
